Like many seniors, my mother didn't have email so she couldn't view my daughter's photos from Europe until they were face to face, but that would be a few months. How could I close this digital distance between the generations in my family?
Information technology intimidates seniors, and research indicates that 55 percent of those 65 and older don't own or won't use a PC. Seniors are afraid of computer keyboards, but they have no problems looking at TV screens or punching buttons.
So why not create a device that functions as an intercom, message center, electronic bulletin board and concierge for those in senior living communities? Information can be delivered through a small kiosk or portable tablet with a simple touch screen and voice activation.
This new technology helps seniors connect with family, friends and fellow residents and reach out to area service providers who pay a fee to be listed. It also allows senior communities to offer an impressive, customizable set of amenities.
With the over-60 population expected to grow to 55 million in 2020, we have the opportunity to enhance both their safety and their quality life. Closing the digital divide to help seniors stay informed, active and in touch with loved ones is a positive societal impact.
