At a recent seminar, I learned how positive outcomes in therapy may be achieved more easily through changes in the environment and behavioral modifications rather than medication.

Tom Conrad, a behavioral specialist at Therapy Partners, spoke about "Chemical Restraint Reduction Through the Use of Therapy" at the American College of Health Care Administrator's 18th Annual Winter Marketplace show in Las Vegas. His passion for what he does was amazing.

Conrad explained that rather than medication to solve behavior, therapists should find approaches based on behavior, brain function and the environment. “Adverse or aggressive behavior occurs when the demand on a person exceeds the person's ability to cope at any given time," he explained.

Therapists can reduce chemical restraint by offering therapy techniques to provide positive outcomes, not only for the resident, but the caregiver as well. For example, a resident's behavior is often reported as being aggressive, when in reality the resident is reacting to the approach to treatment, Conrad said. That aggression can be taken out on the healthcare providers. One fascinating statistic: Conrad estimated 98% of all aggressive behavior can be avoided just by changing the approach!!!!

That is a powerful statistic and why Conrad is a valuable resource to the residents and staff at Therapy Partners. Education and changes in environment can be used in place of the medication. There also is a cost containment benefit with providing therapy techniques in place of chemical restraints.

Tom Conrad not only educated attendees that day, but changed the lives of many by offering therapy solutions to improve the quality life for the elderly!
